What you will learn:

Vertical suspension is a specific type of suspension where the body holds a vertical/upright position as if you were standing on your own but suspended in ropes. There are many possibilities to create shapes inspired by verticality while the model's head and torso can keep their standing position, the hips and legs can vary in different forms which makes this type of suspension quite challenging for the model to be in, can be very risky for injuries, as well can cause different problems of dizziness and other unwell sensations if not done properly or with care. Riggers can find those positions pretty hard to achieve as it is required a lot of technical understanding about ropes and body mechanics but also making it look like a true vertical shape.

Pauline is known to create interesting forms with the body and creative suspensions methods in their career, and in this workshop, they will share some of the basis of their method to create challenging but enjoyable vertical positions while prioritizing safety and the model needs. Everybody has a different body and mind and this is what Pauline is most interested in. Break free from copy & paste method and start to enjoy your own practice. Pauline will share the theoretical method behind their ideas of playing with vertical suspensions and their possible transitions, then will show some exercises and examples to be inspired from after this workshop.

About Pauline Massimo:

Pauline Massimo (no pronouns/they), with roots in Brazil and feet in Barcelona, founder of Espacio Nos and Learn Shibari.

They have been very intense and proactively involved in Shibari for more than 14 years, exercising multiple roles as a visual artist, performer, instructor, organizer, learner, researcher, mentor, and among other things, nationally and internationally. Their way of feeling, experiencing, and exposing Shibari, starts from its interdisciplinary and multifaceted base where they explore the infinite relationships with other disciplines and ways of coexisting in the world with a strong tie to radical politics, social constructions, neurodivergence, etc.

They have vast experience giving workshops, classes, lectures, and courses on Shibari and interdisciplinary practices contributing from their own perspective as a rigger, model, and selftier in well-known rope spaces in Europe such as in England, Mexico, Germany, Czech Republic, France, Spain, Costa Rica, Martinique, Colombia, Portugal, The Netherlands, as well as in Brazil, Turkey, etc.

They opt for a more progressive way of studying and learning, choosing precision and detail in their classes. They work from an approach where it takes the student's existing knowledge as a starting point and helps them to realistically approach their goals, always keeping their feet on the ground with conscious practice.

When Pauline is talking about Shibari and teaching, always has in their mind the involvement of both roles with their own complexities and contributing inputs. Both the rigger and model coexist independently and need attention separately, but also as a team working together in having a productive, positive, and intimate journey.

As an agender person, they have no pronouns or gender reference but do not mind having neutral terms used toward them (They/them, for example).
